Located
in the Pacific Northwest, Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston,
Washington have very mild climates due to their low elevations
above sea level. Spring comes early to the LC Valley,
summer is long and warm, autumn is a delightful time of
year, and winter normally brings little snowfall.
Total precipitation during the year averages only 13 inches.
The
confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers marks the
boundary between Washington and Idaho, and these rivers
offer outstanding recreation, including some of the best
steelhead and salmon fishing in the U.S.. The Snake
River also leads from the L-C Valley into the depths of
Hells Canyon, one of the deepest gorge in North America.
Exciting
jet boat trips into Hells Canyon are offered by several
outfitters in the Lewiston-Clarkston area.
Hells
Canyon is also home to the nation's largest population of
bighorn sheep.

Buffalo
Eddy Petroglyphs
The Lewis-Clark Valley, together with the surrounding
mountains and prairies, are the traditional home of the
Nez Perce people.
Petroglyphs, such as those shown here at Buffalo Eddy,
are a reminder that ancient people hunted the hills and
fished the waters of the Lewis-Clark Valley.
Buffalo Eddy can be reached by road on the Washington
side of the Snake River |
| The headquarters of the Nez
Perce National Historical Park is located at
Spalding, Idaho, just one half hour from Lewiston.
The park itself contains 38 sites, mostly in Idaho,
encompassing the valleys, prairies, mountains and plateaus
of the inland northwest that have been home to the Nez
Perce people for thousands of years. |
